SIKI IM

Siki Im is a German-born, New York based designer whose roots stretch back to his Korean origins. Perhaps because of this eclectic set of circumstances his collections often seem to draw on the influence of indigenous cultures and modern, underground tribes.

We caught up with him in his NYC studio located in a similar diverse atmosphere : in an industrial building in downtown Soho bordering both Tribeca and Chinatown. The designer himself shot these spontaneous, unofficial images to give a flavor of how his looks can be worn in an everyday setting. He also shared the inspiration for the collection; the works of Native American pottery artist Maria Martinez, which led him to create a collection that both draws from and sustains Native American culture.
The Designer states: “The Fall/Winter 2011 collection comes from silence. In this fourth season I tried to rediscover a tranquil, and somber spirituality in returning to our roots in mother earth. The collection is grounded with the awareness of the importance of our soils. Quadrupled layers of wools, cashmeres, Swiss felts, and waxed cottons protect the wearer from the slowly chilling elements as winter draws near, while rabbit felt hats shield and shelter the head. The colors reflect the shortening of the daylight, moving into night with shades of soil ,deep indigo, and setting further into black.”
